Our Overarching Mission
Addressing Diversity and Inclusion in the Medical Profession and the Shortage of Clinicians in Underserved Communities
At GIMHS, we aspire to provide better access to medical degree training programs for all demographics of the premedical student population while addressing our overarching mission of increasing diversity and inclusion in the medical profession and tackling the issue of clinician shortages in underserved and rural communities in the United States.
The socioeconomic status and demographics of medical school matriculants, the shortage of clinicians in underserved communities and health disparity are intricately linked. The disproportionately high COVID-19 death toll in underserved communities has only reaffirmed the well-established connection between socioeconomic status and health disparities in the United States and abroad.
To better address the high morbidity of COVID-19 and preventable co-morbidities that increase the risk of death among disadvantaged communities, it is paramount to take steps to increase diversity and inclusion in the medical profession and higher education. Such steps are essential to significantly reduce health disparities and prevent unnecessary loss of life and human capital in the event of a future pandemic.
AAMC data on US medical school applicants and acceptance demographics clearly demonstrate a disproportionately low matriculation rate into medical schools for students from blue-collar, working-class, socioeconomically challenged, minority and Hispanic/Latino backgrounds, as well as first-generation college-going families.
